  • Abstract:

The effect of sustained uniaxial compressive stress on chloride permeability was experimentally investigated. A new type of chloride permeability test using an electrical technique was developed for this study which enabled the electrical diffusion rate of chloride ions to be obtained during two weeks of testing. No significant change in the electrical diffusion rate was found up to 60% of the maximum stress level. In excess of 60%, however, the electrical diffusion rate increased noticeably. In addition, there was no significant difference in the electrical diffusion rate between lightweight concrete and normal weight concrete with equal water to cement ratios. Gas permeability testing was also done and showed similar behavior.
