Assuring quality lightweight concrete depends on proper specifications, field handling.1. Contamination: Stockpiling the lightweight aggregate where it is exposed to spillage of normal weight materials. This, of course, is instrumental in causing a weight problem.
2. Moisture adjustment: The change between normal weight coarse aggregate having a moisture adjustment of 1% to 2% compared to 6% to 8% with the lightweight aggregate resulting in a loss of yield.
3. Ready mix procedures: if normal, sound ready mix procedures are observed including proper mixing times, correct mixer capacities, and stockpiling, many of the problems are eliminated before the project is started.
