  • Abstract:

Concrete masonry is an economical, fire-safe, and attractive construction material that is becoming increasingly versatile in its architectural “look” while maintaining structural strength. Customized units are beginning tomove to the building exterior, providing another masonry veneer option. But what about its energy efficiency?
Recent energy conservation systems and advances in concrete masonry walls are poorly understood in today’s welter of competing interests’ R-value and U-value claims. This article’s purpose is to update specifiers and the construction industry at large on important developments improving the often maligned energy efficienty of popular concrete masonry construction.
