Insulation of masonry walls is a good idea. This article discusses several ideas in general. Research has shown that the thermal performance of masonry walls and their resistance to heat flow can be greatly improved by adding insulation. But what type of insulation should you use for masonry walls? Where should it be installed?
Hollow units can easily be insulated with loose fill, foam or granular materials.
Multi-wythe cavity walls and veneer walls over wood or metal frame construction have air spaces for granular fills or rigid insulating boards.
In addition to filling the wall cavities, insulation may be applied to the interior of the wall and/or to the exterior of the wall.
Masonry walls can, of course, be insulated in more than one way at a time. For example, the cores in the wall may be filled and rigid insulation placed on the interior and/or exterior of the wall. Or insulation may be placed in both the cores and wall cavities.
