In recent years a variation in concrete masonry construction was introduced which permits masonry type construction to resist bending stresses. The addition of concrete fill and steel opened new fields of use to concrete masonry in beams, floors, columns, and wall sections subjected to bending. Present day uses of reinforced concrete masonry construction include the filling of horizontal and vertical cores at intervals in vertical walls. This design is used especially on the West coast where earthquakes would otherwise be very destructive to masonry construction. Other uses include lintel beams over doors and windows and columns or pilasters to support upper floors or roofs. The various patented floor systems using precast blocks also belong to this classification. Sand and gravel and Haydite blocks, obtained locally, were used in this program.
