  • Abstract:

The problems that arise in the technical production of lightweight concrete are inversely proportional to the proficiency and experience of “the lightweight team.” My definition of “the lightweight team” is that interdependent combination of lightweight aggregate producer, engineer/specifier, ready-mix producer, concrete contractor, and laboratory technician. A severe competency/knowledge deficiency on the part of any team member will result in anything from material waste to final structural failure. In this regard, I hesitate to use the hackneyed analogy “a chain is as strong as its weakest link,” but there are structural steel buildings today standing as monuments to the “bad experience” of former lightweight concrete designers.
