This study into the use of “all-lightweight” aggregate (Aglite) for making structural concrete is in two parts. The first deals with mix design, and a method utilizing pfa to impart desired cohesiveness and a water-reducing admixture (Conplast 337) to impart adequate workability is proposed which is capable of producing “all lightweight” aggregate concrete with 28-day compressive strength up to 50 N/mm² for normal water and air-curing respectively. The tensile strength and the modulus of elasticity are shown to increase at a decreasing rate with compressive strength, but Aglite concrete shows a more brittle failure than normal concrete. The range of drying shrinkage values is comparable to that observed for concrete made with normal aggregate (crushed-rock or gravel) of a low shrinkage value. In short, “all-Aglite” concrete may be used for all structural applications.
