  • Abstract:

As a measure of the growth of the industry in the U.S., in the early fifties, less than one half of one percent of the structural concrete used lightweight aggregate in any degree. In contrast, of all the concrete cast in the Continental United States last year, over five percent contained lightweight aggregate. This figure includes such items as sidewalks and roadways where lightweight would hardly be justified. And of all the framed structural concrete cast last year, over eleven percent used quality lightweight aggregate. These figures are significant in the same manner that structural lightweight aggregate has been manifest by more sophisticated designs (Slides 3, 4, 5), and exotic shapes created by the architectural profession and made possible by knowledge of the designing engineer.
