Quality control of lightweight concrete begins with quality aggregates, cements, admixtures and people qualified to control the handling of aggregates, the mixing of concrete, job control and finishing. Quality concrete is everyone’s job. First, you must have a mix design that meets the specifications that the engineer desires. Secondly, this mix must be put together in a qualified lab to insure that it meets weight and strength specifications. After the concrete has been thoroughly tested and it meets the specification it is then submitted to the engineer for his approval.Once this is accomplished and before the job begins the ready-mix producer should have a pre-job meeting. Represented at this meeting should be the owner, the contractor, the concrete contractor, the ready-mix producer and the lightweight aggregate producer and the testing laboratory. Things that should be discussed: — the size of each pour — the number of trucks it will take to do the job — how the concrete will be handled — the testing procedures — the curing of the concrete cylinders (how and where) — everyone should be familiarized with the specifications – that each person understands what the engineer wants and who has control.
