  • Abstract:

Expanded shale (rotary kiln process) aggregate used in the manufacture of concrete masonry units (blocks) as generally produced varies to some degree in fire resistive properties depending on the source of the shale and the weight. This investigation of concrete masonry units (blocks) made of expanded shale aggregate was to observe the variations in fire performance with the view of making available to the Industry as a whole, users, and others concerned, specifications for expanded shale aggregate for use in concrete masonry units (blocks). As a result of the investigation, it is anticipated to establish for manufacturers of concrete masonry units (blocks), Listing and Certificate Service on units conforming with specifications developed.
