  • Abstract:

On May 21, 1980, the southern boundary arch of Berlin Congress Hall collapsed, taking with it the roof section it supported outside the auditorium. In April 1982, the Berlin Senate decided to re-erect the structure as a festival hall. In March 1983, seven concrete and two steel construction companies were invited to draw up designs and binding quotations as part of a selective tendering procedure. The first of the following papers, which were presented as part of a series of lectures organized by the Structural Analysis Department of the Technical University of Berlin, outlines the results of preliminary investigations and the principles on which tendering was based. Two rope net roofs were proposed in addition to a number of reinforced concrete or prestressed concrete structures, some of which employing lightweight concrete. The reports differ with respect to the emphasis placed on individual sections of the building, such as the roof, boundary arches, abutments and foundations. On the whole, the solutions proposed by the construction companies for this interesting engineering task reflect a high standard of expertise and a tremendous wealth of ideas. In German.
