The paper first describes the origins and then the modern production of lightweight concrete in North America. Research undertaken during the last 15 years by the PCA is then described, including the conclusions contained in reports on the physical characteristics of various lightweight aggregate concretes. Studies on the time-dependent shortening characteristics of reinforced lightweight concrete columns are also described. The ACI “Guide for Structural Lightweight Concrete” is discussed in detail. The paper has 25 illustrations including performance curves on the testing of columns and photographs of notable large and tall lightweight concrete structures in North America. (With Photos).
