    This thesis discusses the approach used in the second phase of the research program to overcome the problems faced during commercial production of quality concrete masonry units. It also provides information about effects of different types of aggregate, cementitious material, and admixture on the strength of lightweight as well as normal weight CMUs. Chapter 2 gives information on different aggregate properties and their influence on the texture and strength of CMUs. Chapter 3 gives different mix proportions and their compressive strength results. Chapter 4 includes a discussion of a cost analysis and productivity study. Chapter 5 gives the conclusions of the research undertaken and recommendations for the future research. The appendices give sample calculations and figures showing different shapes of CMUs.This is Volume 1 of a five volume set with executive summary in the publication named above.
