The University of Nebraska’s Center for Infrastructure Research has developed a lightweight concrete masonry units that can replace the standard 38 pound unit in modern construction. The focus of this Volume 4 of the project was to test the new units to assess whether they were as durable as normal weight units and to make recommendations for refinements to the mix design that would increase the durability of the units. An analysis of the expected savings due to the increase in field productivity by the use of lightweight units is also included. The final chapter gives conclusions to the entire project.A modification of the ASTM C666 test method was used for freeze-thaw testing. Test results indicated that the high performance lightweight units had significantly more freeze-thaw resistance than ‘standard’ lightweight units. Some of the high performance lightweight units out performed standard normal weight units.
