Female participation in masonry construction tends to vary by region, depending partly on the type of masonry units laid in a geographic area. In Kentucky, Young worked with three other female bricklayers, whereas in Florida she has seen only one other woman at the jobsite. This is because the concrete block in Florida is heavier. “Down here, a concrete block is 35 pounds,” she says. “But in the Northern states and some of the Southeastern states, an 8-inch block is usually about 28 pounds.”
