Project Description:

Jon and Karen Huntsman Foundation donated over $500 million to build the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah Campus in Salt Lake City. The research facility and cancer treatment hospital — the largest of its kind in the western U.S. — was constructed in four phases, beginning in 2000 and completing in 2023. The full campus boasts around one million square feet of cancer research and care space. The project used more than 300,000 cubic yards of lightweight concrete, including 195,000 cubic yards of structural lightweight coarse aggregate meeting ASTM C330 and supplied by Utelite Lightweight Aggregates.

Project Requirements:

  • Square Footage: Over 1 million square feet of hospital and research space
  • Lightweight Concrete Yardage: 300,000+ cubic yards (195,000 CY structural LW coarse aggregate meeting ASTM C330, supplied by Utelite Lightweight Aggregates)
  • Compressive Strength: ASTM C31 & C39 – 4000 psi @ 28 days
  • Splitting Tensile Strength: C496 = 330 psi
  • Density of LW Concrete: ASTM C567 – 110 ± 3 lbs
  • Air Content for LW Concrete: ASTM C173 6% ± 1%
  • Fire Rating: UL 2 hour fire rating tested under ASTM E119
