Salt Lake City Corporation, in conjunction with UDOT, began a bridge deck rehabilitation project in early 2015. The deck of this railroad bridge overpass was widened by 6 feet with pedestrian/bicycle improvements for access and safety. Seismic improvements were also included to the structure in this rehabilitation project.
Internal curing was specified in the concrete specification utilizing crushed fines as the pre-wetted carrier for internal moisture. This project utilized 2500 cubic yards of internally cured concrete.
During concrete placement, not a single load of concrete was rejected. The ease of placing/pumping IC concrete was a factor in this bridge being opened to traffic two months ahead of schedule in July 2015.
