In the November 13, 2009 issue, ESCSI President John Ries P.E. discussed how SmartWall(sm) Masonry contributes to sustainability, focusing on its superior energy performance.
He pointed out the even lightweight masonry has significant thermal mass. This thermal mass, combined with increased R values compared to normal weight concrete, provides improved wall performance in dynamic heating and cooling environments. John explained that thermal mass and thermal resistance combine to provide increased thermal inertia, which is an important factor in reducing building energy consumption.
John recently finished his term as chair of ACI Committee 122, Energy Efficiency of Concrete and Masonry Systems. A report on Thermal Inertia co-authored by Ries and CTL’s Martha VanGeem has been submitted for publication to ACI’s Concrete International.
