  • Abstract:

The factors that mainly affect the corrosion of steel reinforcement embeeded in concrete are discussed, viz., cement content, carbonation, concrete cover and exposure. Various investigations on the protection afforded by lightweight concrete against corrosion of the reinforcement are described and conclusions are drawn. The resistance against deterioration of actual structures made with different kinds of lightweight aggregate is considered with examples. Where properly designed and made, reinforced lightweight concrete is as safe against deterioration due to corrosion of the reinforcement or attack on the concrete, as other types of concrete containing steel reinforcement.
