The bridge environment exposes concrete to some of the worst imaginable conditions. Bridges are often subjected to cumulative environmental effects. Aggressive salts, freezing and thawing, wetting and drying, and heating and cooling are superimposed on structural members already highly stressed by external loads and restrained volume changes. Lightweight concrete has emerged as an important sector of the structural concrete industry.
