Using the author’s proposal for the Messina Bridge, the paper illustrates how the costs for widespan suspension bridges can be reduced by choosing suitable materials, such as galvanized steel wire for cables and hangers, aluminum for the stiffening girder and lightweight concrete for the towers. Nevertheless, all demands on the part of the client withregard to aerodynamic stability loadbearing capacity, deflections and resistance to earthquakes can be satisfied. In German.
