This paper explains the development of a cement based high strength lightweight material called Aerocrete. The strength of this material is 29 N/mm/SUP/2 with a density of 1800 kg/m/SUP/3. The mechanical properties of this material qualify its use in conjunction with steel as in normal reinforced concrete. Better deformation capacity in the post-ultimate range and the large energy absorption capacity of this material enhances its suitability for use as precast structural elements for low cost housing. The cost of production of Aerocrete is cheaper than that of conventional aerated concretes because of the elimination of aeration agents and autoclave curing.
