  In order to study the suitability of ferrocement as a roofing material, thin slabs of ferrocement were cast and covered by a layer of lightweight mortar topping which was assumed to be non-load bearing. These slabs were tested to failure and their load-deflection response has been studied. The performance of the lightweight topping is found to be satisfactory in the serviceability limits. An empirical relationship between ultimate load and specific surface is established within the range of the variables presented in this investigation. Finite element method is used to compare the experimental results. The agreement between the theoretical results and the experimental data is remarkably good.
