In a broad sense, foundation engineering is the art of selecting, designing, and constructing the elements that transfer the weight of a structure to the underlying soil or rock. In practice, however, the actual construction is usually not carried out by the organization responsible for the design; the role of the engineer is generally considered to consist only of the selection of the type of foundation, the design of the substructure, and the supervision of construction. It is the purpose of this book to provide the basic information necessary to carry out this role.
