  • Abstract:

The bridge crossing the river Lahn near Runkel was built around 1440 and survived five centuries without damage, but high sulfur dioxide concentrations in the air, stress caused by dew salts and increasing traffic had damaging effects on the natural stone masonry. A complete overhaul with structural breeze concrete and a simultaneous increase in the load capacity from bridge class 18 to bridge class 30 are to preserve the structure for future generations.
