The usefulness of fire test information is reflected through the various building codes in which certain requirements concerning the fire endurance of building constructions have been set out. Designers, however, are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that only limited damage will result if fire breaks out by reducing the overall fire risk. The most effective way in which this may be achieved is through the use of fire resistant construction to divide a building into fire resistive `compartments’. This important design principle, known as `compartmentation’, is the single most effective way of confining a fire. To utilize this principle effectively, the fire resistive properties of materials and assemblies must in some way be evaluated. The standard fire test method provides a means by which we may evaluate performance in fire.
