The process discussed provides a new method for prevention of shrinkage in lightweight concrete. The process exploits the expansive forces developed by the crystal structure changes that result when the tricalcium aluminate is converted to ettringite (calcium aluminate trisulfate hydrate) by sulfate reagents.
Variations of this reaction have been tuilized by Lossier, Mikhailov and, in recent years, A. Klein and others, to offset the drying shrinkage inherent in the silicate fraction of portland cement. The commonly-used source of the SO3 component is calcium sulfate as gypsum CaSO4.2H20, or an hydrite, CaSo4.
